Akron store customer killed while trying to subdue armed robber


AKRON — A customer is dead after trying to stop a robber from fleeing an Akron convenience store.

Police say the suspect walked into Luei’s Market on Hammel Street around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

After robbing a store clerk of cash, police say, the suspect fled the carryout.

Police Lt. Rick Edwards said the suspect was confronted by another man in the store’s parking lot who appears to have sprayed some type of pepper spray to subdue the robber.

Edwards said the suspect turned and shot the man and then fled running through the nearby Parklane Manor apartments.

The wounded victim was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital where he later died.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim pending the notification of his relatives.
