LIMA — This week’s Youth Profile focuses on Cora Bicknell, a junior at Lima Senior High School.

She’s involved in art and DECA, an organization that prepares leaders and entrepreneurs to be college- and career-ready.

“In DECA, I am an art student and I chose to be in DECA because I wanted to see the marketing side of art because everyone tells me you’re going to be like a starving artist. I’m like, I’m going to prove everyone wrong,” she said.

She designed a pin that was a finalist for the DECA Ohio organization. It’s something for which she is really proud.

“It went great. I had a bunch of support from my DECA chapters and I was super-happy and quite surprised when I found out that my pin was selected. It was a big opportunity for an upcoming young artist so I really am grateful for it,” she said.

She’ll know if her pin is chosen to represent Ohio at the state DECA conference in March.

Cora’s love of art is quite evident and she uses it to help others.

“I just really enjoy art. I really enjoy painting. I really enjoy helping people out with crafts, I do a bunch of community projects,” she said.

When she’s not designing pins for DECA you might find her behind a canvas with paintbrush in hand. So, what is her favorite medium?

“I love using acrylic because it dries fast. Watercolors is all right. Oil paints take way too long to dry. If anything I just like dabbling with everything. It’s going to be messy but my thing is like if you don’t get messy then you don’t get the job done,” she said.

She said she hopes to parlay her love of art into a career.

“Past high school I hope to go into a college for art and also probably minor in business so then I could go into a business that’s graphics, do like advertising for them,” she said.

Besides art, Cora is also a member of the swim team at Lima Senior.
