Tornado hit Mercer County on Monday evening

ROCKFORD — A tornado touched down near Rockford during the thunderstorm Monday night, officials confirmed.

“We set off the tornado sirens at 8:26 after one was sighted near Rockford,” said 911 dispatcher Rachel Williams with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, adding sirens were also sounded in Celina at 8:40 p.m. and Coldwater at 8:41 p.m.

The tornado destroyed a shed and damaged some trees, but most of the damage was done to corn crops, said Mike Robbins, director of the Mercer County office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
