Shelby Co. buggy crash sends 6 to hospital

SIDNEY — A family of six was taken to hospital after the horse-drawn buggy they were in was hit by a vehicle Thursday, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 10:15 a.m., Jacob Schwartz, 49, of Maplewood, was operating a horse-drawn buggy, traveling eastbound on state Route 47 west of the Logan-Shelby County line. Nicholas Emerich, 31, of Bellefontaine, was also traveling eastbound. Emerich did not see the buggy ahead of him and ran into it from behind.

The six occupants of the buggy, which included Schwartz, his wife, Rosa, and their four children, ranging in age from 1 to 9 years old, were all ejected. All were transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney for treatment. One child was later transferred to Dayton Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.

Neither speed, alcohol nor distracted driving are believed to have contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.
