Lima Senior hospitality program named ‘elite’
LIMA — Lima Senior High School has been named to the 2016 Elite 50, an annual selection of the top 50 secondary school hospitality programs in the nation.
The Elite 50 list recognizes high schools as well as career and technical centers that have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in hospitality education. According to a news release from the National Center for Hospitality Studies, these schools “set the standard for secondary school training in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, and/or hospitality management.”
More than 350 schools designated as Hospitality Programs of Distinction were invited to apply for the honor of being named to the Elite 50 list. Criteria for the schools selected for the Elite 50 included: an original recipe with photos or a restaurant management design; two student essays on the topic “Why I want to pursue a career in hospitality;” and informational materials such as videos or brochures about the school’s program.
Students to make, donate dog toys
LIMA — Students in Heritage Elementary School’s K-Kids Club are making dog toys to donate to the Humane Society of Allen County. The toys are made out of old T-shirts and require teamwork to get them completed.
Students will work on the project from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:40 to 8:10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
K-Kids Club is an extension of the Lima Kiwanis Club. Lima schools has a number of Kiwanis-sponsored clubs in its buildings.
Shawnee releases financial statements
LIMA — Shawnee schools’ general purpose financial statements for the year ending June 30 have been completed and are available for public inspection.
The statements are located in the Office of the Treasurer, 3255 Zurmehly Road, Lima, during normal office hours.

Marimor to present holiday program
LIMA — The Marimor School holiday music program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. This year’s theme is “Polar Express.”
In addition to holiday songs and dance, the students will be showcased in a video that was made during a residency through a grant from the Ohio Arts Council. Actor Alan Bomar Jones produced the video using pictures and videos of the students that were taken throughout the three-week residency.

Fledderjohann wins New Knoxville bee
NEW KNOXVILLE — Carly Fledderjohann, an eighth grader at New Knoxville, won the New Knoxville Spelling Bee. She will compete at the regional bee in Lima.
Second-place winner was Hunter Fultz, a seventh grader, while third place went to sixth grader Alysha Katterheinrich. There were 80 contestants in the bee.
Houses for Change money collected
LIMA — After collecting money for Family Promise of Lima-Allen County, students in Lima schools are now ready to dump their donations into the big Houses for Change model house.
Representatives from each school will be at Lima Senior High School at 9:30 a.m. today. Students will put their money into the large house made by Lima Senior construction trades and art students.
About 500 students have spent the last few weeks participating in Houses for Change, a national Family Promise program designed to educate students about homelessness and show them that they can also help the cause.
Students decorated house-shaped boxes and then collected money to put in their “houses.” The money will go in the large house and then to Family Promise.
Early release precedes winter break
LIMA — Students in Lima schools will be released early Friday, the last day of school before winter break. Students are then off for winter break until Jan. 4.
Here are release times for individual schools:
1 p.m.: Lima North Middle School.
1:15 p.m.: Freedom Elementary School, Heritage Elementary School, Independence Elementary School, Unity Elementary School, South Science and Technology Magnet School, Lima Senior Alternative School.
1:30 p.m.: Liberty Arts Magnet School, Lima Senior High School.
1:45 p.m.: Lima West Middle School.
Crestview names Students of the Month
CONVOY — Crestview Middle School teachers have nominated one student from each grade to receive the October and November Students of the Month designation. According to a news release, these students have shown a strong work ethic when completing their studies, and have gone the “extra mile” in helping others in their classes.
Students of the Month for October include sixth-grader Alyssa Hoersten, seventh-grader Logan Gerardot and eighth-grader Danee Krouse. November Students of the Month include sixth-grader Alexia Taylor, seventh-grader Jordan Updegrove and eighth-grader Aubrey Gebert.
