Robotics team ‘e-cycles’

DELPHOS — The St. John’s seventh-grade Lego Robotics team, “The Destroyers,” collected 250 small electronic devices to be e-cycled.

This effort was part of their First Lego League project on “trash.” These devices contain a large number of hazardous substances. If they end up in landfills, these substances stay in our environment for a long time.

The team will be sending them to a company that will properly reuse or recycle the devices. By recycling, they can recover precious metals such as gold, silver and copper. By reusing, they can reduce the demand for an ore called coltan. Coltan is a source element found in cellphones. Coltan is mined in the Congo, which is also the home of endangered gorillas. Their homes are being destroyed because of this mining.
