Lima man arrested in May hit-and-run death

LIMA — A Lima man faces charges in connection with the hit-and-run death of a motorcyclist May 31.

Robert Catlett III, 31, of 435 E. McKibben St., was arrested at 9:12 a.m. Sunday on two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, one a second-degree felony and the other a third-degree felony, and failure to stop after an accident, a third-degree felony.

A grand jury indicted Catlett on the charges Monday. Catlett is scheduled for arraignment at 9 a.m. Friday in Allen County Common Pleas Court.

He was taken to the Allen County Jail and ordered to be held in lieu of a $20,000 cash bond.

Catlett had been a person of interest in the investigation involving the death of Aaron Ehrnsberger, 27. Ehrnsberger was riding his motorcycle west on Allentown Road at 12:19 a.m. May 31 near the intersection of Kenilworth Avenue when an eastbound car turned in front of him, police said. Ehrnsberger was taken to the hospital where he died about eight hours later.

According to Allen County Sheriff Sam Crish, the warrant was served to Catlett at the Allen County Jail. He did not know the reason Catlett was at the jail at the time the warrant was served.

The Lima Police Department is handling the investigation in the case. Sgt. Paula Strickler was not immediately able to be contacted to find out why Catlett may have already been at the jail.

Catherine Wilson, 26, told investigators during proceedings in Putnam County Common Pleas Court that she was a passenger in her car driven by Catlett, leading to the death. Wilson was sentenced to three years in prison Aug. 3 for a probation violation after she and Catlett fled to Florida shortly after the crash. Catlett had been on probation for a burglary charge. Wilson has not been charged in Ehrnsberger’s death. Wilson also was sentenced to another year of prison for a probation violation from a 2013 Allen County case in which she pleaded guilty to trafficking in heroin, a fifth-degree felony.

The Lima Police Department reported in a Facebook post on July 29 that the pair had been located in Leon County, Florida, when the Leon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Wilson on the warrant. The LPD was able to link her to the fatal accident after debris collected at the crash scene was later matched to a Dodge Stratus owned by Wilson, which they found June 2 in the 400 block of East McKibben Street.
