LIMA — The Ohio Department of Health recommends that travelers to areas with active Zika virus transmission should take the following precautions to prevent mosquito bites, which is the primary way the virus is contracted:
•Use an Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellent, such as DEET.
•Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
•Choose a hotel or lodging with air conditioning or window/door screens.
•If you are not able to protect yourself from mosquitoes inside your home or hotel, sleep under a mosquito bed net.
A list of areas with active Zika virus transmission can be found online at http://cdc.gov/travel.
Eighty percent of people infected with the Zika virus will not have symptoms and may not know they are infected. Because of this, the CDC recommends travelers take the same precautions to prevent mosquito bites for three weeks after returning home, so Zika does not spread from an infected traveler to local mosquitoes and, potentially, to other people.
