LIMA — There probably aren’t many people in Lima who haven’t been to Kewpee’s downtown restaurant including at lunch time.
Over 37 years, Manager Becky Rypkema has seen them all. She knows all the regulars and many repeat customers by name. On any given lunch hour, which starts at 10:30 a.m. and runs through 3 p.m., the fast-food restaurant known around the country is one busy place.
“We usually have a line to the door until after 1 p.m. The drive-through is wrapped around all day,” she said, meaning cars line the street and sometimes around the corner.
Rypkema spends lunchtime working the drive-through, taking orders. She’s just one of 10 employees making sure people get their hamburger made exactly like they want it.
It gets so busy, Rypkema said it sometimes seems like the day just started when it’s time to leave.
“The day goes by very quickly,” she said.
Rypkema said the Kewpee downtown is one fun place to work and one of the reasons she’s been there for four decades.
