KENTON — Kenton Police Officer Skyler Newfer could return home as early as Sunday, Hardin County Sheriff Keith Everhart said Sunday.
Newfer was shot twice in the buttocks as he attempted to take cover behind his police cruiser when a man got out of his vehicle with a rifle during a traffic stop and began shooting at him, Everhart said.
Newfer was taken to the hospital by a sheriff’s deputy who was a part of a short chase after Steve Davis, 47, of Kenton, drove off when officers responded to a disturbance on Grove Street about 5 p.m. Saturday.
Davis led police on a six-mile chase west of Kenton stopping several times to exit his car and shoot at officers. Officers returned fire each time, Everhart said.
Davis was shot during the exchanges and crashed his car on county Road 106 near township Road 105. Deputies approaching with their guns drawn and found Davis dead in the vehicle. No gun fire was exchanged at the crash scene, authorities said.
