LIMA — Starting at the beginning of December, customers will be able to get Sara Anderson’s cupcakes five days a week, instead of just two.
Anderson, owner of Sara’s Sweets, is expanding her cupcake business from selling at The Met two days a week to its own location on South Eastown Road.
The store, which will be located next to the Vein Care Center in Lima, will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
“I’ve been planning to move for like two years,” Anderson said, as she’s been making the cupcakes out of her home. “I really wanted to expand into a full-fledged store front bakery because Lima doesn’t have anything like that really.”
Her operation has outgrown her home and the demand for her products has exceeded the two days a week she sells them and the amount she can make in her own kitchen.
The popularity of her cupcakes is evidenced by how quickly they sell. Last Saturday, she sold out of her supply in 15 minutes.
“I’m just excited to be able to keep up with demand better,” Anderson said. “As people walk in and buy them we can just bake more.”
The location is being built and Sara’s Sweets will occupy a space at the south end of it. The space is 1,200 square feet and will feature a kitchen and seating area for four to eight people, Anderson said.
It will mostly be for takeout orders, and will offer drinks, eight to 10 cupcake varieties, cookies, brownies and other types of treats, Anderson said.
Anderson has been working on the location and getting permits and other things to make it ready since January, she said. She’s also hired two part-time people to help her with the store.
Anderson started baking cupcakes in the summer of 2012 and it took off in 2013, she said.
“I never thought that it would happen. When I started I never thought it would be a bakery,” she said. “It’s not maintainable at the level it’s at. I’d rather keep growing the business and see where it can go.
“There’s just a lot more opportunity.”
