VAN WERT — State troopers were investigating the death of a 58-year-old Antwerp man whose body was found Friday alongside U.S. Route 30 in a culvert.

The body of John M. Chilcote was spotted by a man riding by on a bicycle. The body was lying along the north side of U.S. 30 at 4:31 p.m. Friday in Tully Township. Troopers were called to the scene and found Chilcote’s body, the Van Wert post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported Saturday.

Authorities said they believe Chilcote’s death was from natural causes while he was working to clear a drainage tile near a field he farmed but there remains some work to do in the investigation.

Deputy Van Wert County Coroner Dr. Matthew Miller pronounced Chilcote dead at 5:40 p.m. Friday.
