LIMA — A leisure night out, good music and a tasty snack if you so desire.

That’s what the Concert in the Parks series offered to about 200 people Sunday night at Faurot Park in Lima. Best of all, the show is free.

The Council for the Arts kicked off its 49th year of Concerts in the Parks on June 28, and local band Stedic and the Groove had attendees tapping their feet to songs such as “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5 and “I Shot the Sheriff” by Bob Marley.

Alison White, 53, of Lima, said she attends the performances fairly often with family members. She sat on a picnic table with her grandchildren, MiMi McGee, 8, and Carson McGee, 9, cuddled around her in blankets enjoying the music.

She said she felt there was not always much to do in the city and that she appreciated the council putting on the event every summer.

“I am not into the orchestra-type bands that they have but I really enjoys these guys,” White said of the band’s reggae-type music. “This gets us out of the house and we can enjoy ourselves at the park.”

Dave and Judy Ryan, both of Lima, said they enjoy their weekly excursions to the park to hear the music.

“It is relaxing and it is something to do,” Dave Ryan said.

“I love the music,” Judy Ryan said. “I sure enjoy it. This band is good and the Army band they had was really good also.”

If you came hungry, Darryl Simpson also had the infamous D & T southern slaw dogs for sale. He said he was happy for the dry weather compared to the rains that had been hampering the first two events.

Simpson sells the hot dogs every Sunday as a fundraiser for the Lima Cowboys midget football team. On Sunday, he said business was good.

“We have a better crowd because the ground isn’t so saturated and it is a nice night out,” Simpson said.

Simpson said he spent the entire winter mastering his new recipe for the slaw dogs and that “it cannot be duplicated.”

The concerts will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. each Sunday through Aug. 16.

The series is sponsored by Happy Daz, the city of Lima, the Council for the Arts, Potash Corp., Blacktop Sealing and Chief Markets.

The Laura Joy Band from Chicago will perform Sunday with its Americana/folk style of music.
