VAN WERT — Dance will be at the center of this week’s entertainment options as John Mueller’s “Winter Dance Party” rolls through Van Wert, and Ohio Northern University presents its annual choreographers’ showcase.
”Winter Dance Party” is the official live recreation of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Mueller, star of Broadway’s “Buddy … the Buddy Holly Story” performs as Holly accompanied by Ray Anthony as Valens and Linwood Sasser as Big Bopper. They are joined by a four-piece band which includes the guitar, drums, stand up bass and Grammy award winner Mike Acosta on saxophone.
The show prides itself on being the only show endorsed by Holly’s widow Maria Elena Holly. It features all the hit songs from the ’50s era including “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Oh Boy,” “Rave On,” “La Bamba,” “Chantilly Lace” and more.
Also that night, local talent will be on display on ONU’s Freed Center stage as the Choreographers’ Showcase returns for its 26th year.
Year after year the show features choreographers from around the state, both with and without ONU connections, in a variety of dance styles ranging from technical and classical ballet to modern dance.
