VAN WERT — David Phelps will return this weekend to the Niswonger Performing Arts Center for the third time.
As usual, Phelps is very close to telling out. Kylie Owens, marketing director for Niswonger, said there are under 100 tickets available as of Tuesday afternoon.
“Every time he comes, including this time, he is pretty close to, if not completely, selling out,” Owens said. “This area just really loves him, so why not keep bringing him back?”
Phelps was last at Niswonger in April 2017 for a Good Friday concert and another holiday-themed concerted in December 2015. He also had a concert at Lima Baptist Temple in September 2017.
Phelps was a member of Grammy-winning gospel group Gaither Vocal Band for more than 15 years, in which the band accumulated two Grammy awards and 10 nominations with its several multiple platinum-selling records.
Since 2000, he has also released 11 solo albums. Most recently, he released “It Must Be Christmas” in 2018. Prior to that in 2017, Phelps released the album “Hymnal,” covering some of the most popular church hymns. As a solo artist, Phelps has received four Grammy nominations with his albums “Everything Good,” “A Cappella,” “Hymns” and “Better Together.”
“He’s got that classic voice you hear in church or on a Christmas radio station,” Owens said. “When you think of all the holiday music, his voice just really stands out.”
