LIMA — For this year’s holiday pops concert, conductor finalist Roger Kalia is focusing on variety.
“This is typically a concert that sells very well with audiences of all ages and all experiences with classical music, so I wanted lots of variety on the concert, meaning there will be not only classical pieces but also movie music, pieces from musicals, holiday classics and carols,” Kalia explained of his selections for “Bells, Brass and Bows.” “All of these types of pieces on the program, I like to call it more of an event than a concert.”
The holiday program will include classical pieces Duke Ellington’s “Peanut Brittle Brigade” from “The Nutcracker Suite,” Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on Greensleeves” and Hector Berlioz’s “Shepherds’ Farewell” in addition to holiday staples “O Holy Night” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”
The symphony will be joined by the Lima Symphony Chorus for an arrangement featuring music from the Christmas movies “Home Alone” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” and a sing-along of traditional carols. Ohio Northern university soprano soloist Emily Estep will also join in. Kalia said there may even be a special appearance from Santa Claus himself.
“I really had an enjoyable time putting this program together,” Kalia said. “We’re going to be exploring different composers from different countries as well. I’m curious to really meet the community and engage.”
