VAN WERT — Janis Joplin fans can have a peek behind her music with the Broadway tribute show “A Night with Janis Joplin.”
Niswonger Performing Arts Center Marketing Director Kylie Owens said the show is unique in that you can still hear all of Joplin’s classics, but there’s that behind the scenes element.
“Her hits will be involved, but also you get to hear the story of her life acted out,” Owens explained. “The show is basically of her singing career, so there’s a little acting and what you’d expect from a full-on Broadway production.”
The show celebrates not only Joplin, but also pays homage to her biggest musical influences in Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith. So not only does the audience get to relive some of Joplin’s greatest hits in “Piece of My Heart,” “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Cry Baby,” but also the hits of those who paved her way.
“A Night with Janis Joplin” was staged at the Lyceum Theatre from October 2013 to February 2014. Mary Bridget Davies, who portrays Joplin, was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2014.
