LIMA — The bar Somewhere will host its first Pride event this weekend for the entire family.
Shelby Prichard, head bartender, said the staff wanted the event to have more of a festival atmosphere where everyone can join in to celebrate not only the LGBT community, but the Lima community at large.
“This is not just about our bar. We wanted it to be about engaging the community and giving back,” Prichard explained. “The whole thing will be very community forward, and we want people to have fun and feel safe.”
A talent show competition will kick off events today followed by a cookout from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday with proceeds going to Bravo, the Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization.
From 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, several different entertainers from magicians to drag queen will take stage, in ShowAPalooza, and a DJ and Glo Foam Party will follow at 11 p.m. There will be a raffle with several of gift cards and baskets donated from local businesses, as well as homemade items, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Throughout the evenings, there will be food trucks, cornhole and pool competitions and kids activities. Prichard said the events will all be very “PG” until about 9 p.m. when more risque performers will take stage.
“It never registered to me until I started working here how much the youth in the community need a home and how much it makes them feel loved and accepted to have somewhere they can go and they are accepted no matter what and are greeted with a smile,” Prichard said. “This community is full of love and there are more people who support you than you think. We want to engage people not about just being gay or whatever but accepting and support members like that. We hope to get the word out and spread love, and if we get to paint some kids faces and make someone smile at the same time, then that’s great.”
