LIMA — The 28th season of ArtSpace/Lima’s Rally on the Square will kick off today with the addition of some new artistic touches.
Executive Director of ArtSpace/Lima Sally Windle said the tradition of providing great live music will again return, but this year will also include interactive art experiences to get back to the heart of the event — serving as the fundraiser for ArtSpace.
“We want people to come in. The reason it’s at our doorstep is we want people to see the artwork in the gallery,” Windle said. “We will also have some active pieces outside that people can participate with, including a large community mural that everyone can work on.”
The ArtSpace galleries and gift shop will also be open during the rallies with people inside to talk about the pieces.
The Rally season will begin with Columbus-based Dixieland jazz band the Whirlybirds. The group includes Lima natives clarinet/saxophonist Joseph Brenneman and bassist Trent Sampson.
“We like to honor the people that are in our region, like the Whirlybirds from Columbus, but also Lima musicians like Nashville Crush and Exploit, those who have played here before because they are here or got their start here.”
But, Windle said this year’s lineup will bring out the best musicians not only locally, but regionally.
“This started in the alley as a few local people, but what’s happened is the crowds have gotten bigger with acts like Earthquakers and the Menus, and great bands attract a great crowd,” Windle said. “It’s become a destination to be here when some of the larger bands are here.”
