LIMA — Whether they’ve been to the box office yet or not, “Avengers: Endgame” fans and all other comic book lovers will get to celebrate together with Free Comic Book Day at Alter Ego Comics.
This will be Alter Ego’s 14th year participating in the nationally recognized holiday where guests will be able to select up to five free comics out of about 50 different titles.
Owner Marc Bowker said all the “big guns” will be available, including the Avengers, Stranger Things, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Riverdale, Justice League, Minecraft and Pokemon.
“That’s the beauty of it. We have something for all ages. Whether you’re 5 or 50 or anywhere in between, there will be something there that people can connect with,” Bowker said.
Bowker said the store usually sees about 1,500 people in foot traffic each year.
“It’s a great opportunity to get comic books out in front of people,” Bowker explained. “We’re to the point where we may have had teens that came in that now have kids and come back to experience it. It’s a very family-friendly festival type of atmosphere.”
Heroes for Hope cosplayers will be at the event, and participants are invited to wear their best comic book garb. From 10 a.m. to noon, Touch a Truck will be available, and from 12:30 to 3 p.m., Artist Ally will be on display featuring local artists and crafts. There will also be food trucks and face painting.
“With the popularity of movies like ‘Endgame,’ which obliterated box office records, TV shows, video games and movies based on comics more and more every year, it’s a gentle reminder that comics are still there as a viable form of entertainment,” Bowker said. “Really what it is, is a celebration of art form that’s been around for many years.”
