As we wrap up the 100-year anniversary of St. Rita’s Medical Center, we will be taking a look at Mercy Health Physicians-Lima, formerly known as St. Rita’s Professional Services. Dave Murphy, vice president of business development, recalls when he realized SRPS was building something special.
“I recall putting together end-of-the-year soundbites for our annual meeting that would help put SRPS’ scope into context. When we looked at our provider visits we realized they would perform about 330- to 350,000 visits that year,” said Murphy. “That number, with just a hint of rounding/Murphy-math, was about twice the population Allen, Auglaize and Putnam counties.”
While the numbers may not have been exact, it was close enough for everyone to tell that there were good things happening within this organization. St. Rita’s Professional Services started with one employee which happened to be Dave Murphy, the executive director. The organization is now up to 27 offices and 15 medical specialties. Some of these include Lima Urology, Advanced Surgical Specialists, St. Rita’s Heart Associates, Klass Family Medicine, Martz & Martin Family Medicine and Family Medicine at UNOH, to name a few.
St. Rita’s Professional Services provided many things for the first time at St. Rita’s. They started the hospitalist program, established the pre-service office, implemented the first electronic medical record and staffing urgent care centers.
Of all the accomplishments that have been made, Murphy shared that the most important to him was “creating a predictable and scalable organization that would ensure important medical specialties were available to serve people living in our community and support strategies to satisfy St. Rita’s Mission in continuing the healing ministry of Jesus.”
When the journey started, nobody could have known the success there was going to be. “I never felt like the ‘executive director’ position was my job, per se. Rather, I felt like it was my turn! Mercy Health Physicians-Lima has since evolved in capability and sophistication that transcends the scope and size we could grow it to,” said Murphy.
The team at Mercy Health Physicians-Lima continues to work toward improving the health of the community by rolling out strategies to better manage populations for at-risk patients, and Dave Murphy is happy knowing he played a small role in creating that.
This is part of a monthly series of stories submitted by St. Rita’s Medical Center marking the 100th anniversary of the hospital.
