LIMA — The Lewis Family McDonald’s Youth Theatre brings a popular feline production to Encore Theatre this weekend with “Disney’s The AristoCats Kids.”
The show is being directed by Madison Downing, 16, of Lima. This is her directorial debut, but she has assisted on two prior productions and she has been active in theater since age 9.
“The AristoCats Kids” production is a musical featuring 25 children ranging in ages from 6 years old to eighth grade.
“It’s going good, the kids really like it. It’s nice that I have worked with a lot of them before and get to teach them all the stuff that I have learned from other people,” said Downing.
The play follows the plotline of the Disney film “The AristoCats,” only the play features more music and dancing.
“The play is very similar, obviously a lot shorter because it’s a kids production. It’s a musical so there is a lot of dancing and singing, but it follows the same plotline of how the cats are taken away. They meet a bunch of animals along the way to kind of help them,” said Downing.
Being close in age to the children has helped Downing in her directing.
“I think I can relate to them because I’m close to their age and I’ve been through what they’re going through at this stage. As a director, they all listen very well. They have their own ideas and stuff, and I like to listen to them to figure out some stuff so they can make the show their own,” said Downing.
