ST. MARYS — St. Marys Chamber of Commerce kicks off the 35th annual St. Marys Summerfest this weekend.
The chamber has brought back fireworks for the first time in four years.
“The public was clear about wanting us to bring them back. So, with this year being our 35th anniversary, we thought to help celebrate that, let’s bring them back. Our goal is to continue them year after year from here on out,” said Abby Balster, executive director of the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce.
Other new events include chainsaw woodcarvers who will be doing demonstration from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. After the parade an auction will be held on the woodcarvings, with 75 percent of the proceeds going to a charity of the purchaser’s choice and 25 percent going into the fireworks fund for next year.
There is also a family color party for the kids. This takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday, with kids competing and then having an all out “color battle” with leftover color from previous color runs.
“Kind of in celebration of 35 years, since we started in 1983, we are going to have an ‘80s theme party in the entertainment tent Saturday night. People can dress in their favorite ‘80s style while listening to Brother Believe Me. We’re excited,” said Balster.
