VAN WERT — It’s not a “festival,” it’s Town Creek Live.
“We avoid the word festival. Next year we are hoping to bring in an art fair,” said Hope Wallace, director of Wassenberg Art Center.
The event is another way to showcase Wassenberg Art Center and entice the public to visit.
“I think throughout history art has kind of gotten a reputation as being stuffy, don’t touch and non-interactive. But it’s really not. I believe that the will to create is inherit in human nature and people are happy when they create. We want to explain that philosophy and share that philosophy with the community and get people out and engaged,” said Wallace.
There has been a remodeling project in the works behind the center, but it’s not finished yet.
“It will be functional in time for the event. Not quite as glorious as it will be in a month or two, though,” said Wallace.
There will be live music all day, Native American dancers and 11 gourmet food trucks from Fort Wayne, Findlay, Lima and Defiance. There will be craft beer from Moeller Brew Barn, wine, domestic beer and art activities. There is an open mic inside the center by Dennis Yurich of Vanity Crash from Cleveland. And then, there is the Duck Derpy.
“We put rubber duckies, dump them into creek with a front-end loader from the county and then the winning duck owner wins $1,500. That has increased $500 this year,” said Wallace.
This year, the event features a giant Scrubbing Bubble that people can ride on which lights up at night.
“We have Scrubbing Bubbles; it’s an art and sound car. People can ride on Scrubby with their drinks and have a good time. Jay Leno has even driven it,” said Wallace.
