CONVOY — Convoy Community Days will be celebrated this weekend, with a truck pull and drag racing planned also.
Convoy Community Days is a fundraiser for the community.
“All the money we raise goes right back into the community. We’ve sponsored scholarships for students at Crestview High School; we give money to the Park Board for updates; we’ve given money to Convoy Preschool, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, soccer clubs, the Historical Society, so everything that we do we turn right around and put it back into Convoy somewhere,” said Brent Jones, chairman of Convoy Community Days.
Convoy Community Days has been around since the 1980s, however, the dates have changed throughout the years.
“For a lot of years it was in the middle of summer, about this time and then it started dwindling down because there was so much competition with other festivals in the areas. So 10 to 12 years ago we moved it to the fourth weekend in September. We did it for several years there and at the same time we started doing things throughout the year. Some people said why not go back to the one weekend? This year we tried to put it all back together to one weekend,” said Jones. “It’s split into two weekends this year, because by the time we started to put all the things together, the truck pull was already booked for this weekend and the only weekend they had available was next weekend. In 2019 we are hoping to have it all on one weekend, the second weekend in July is what we’re planning on.”
The festivities begin at 8 p.m. today for Partying in the Parking Lot in the village parking lot. Twist & Shout Entertainment will be providing entertainment and music for the evening and a beer tent will be open.
Saturday events start with boys and girls all star games, a kids home-run derby, inflatables for kids at park, food vendors, a parade in the afternoon, the fire department putting on a display, car show, music, door prizes, bingo and food.
