Activate Allen County and St. Rita’s Health Partners held their 2017/2018 Activated School Challenge Award ceremony in January. One of this year’s winners was Allen East. Their project, which addressed physical education and physical activity, was led by Kelly Prichard and students in the Allen East High School Student Council.
Allen East plans on increasing student physical activity through a new field day initiative. Utilizing the support received from the Activated School Challenge, the Allen East Student Council will be organizing an annual field day for all students in grades 9 through 12. The field day will include games and competitions such as dodgeball, a sidewalk chalk art contest, a photo scavenger hunt and many additional events. Activities will be intentionally inclusive, so all students may have fun and enjoy participating.
Allen East is also bolstering their physical education program through the Activated School Challenge. They will be using new PE equipment for students in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Allen East’s head Phys. Ed. teacher Mrs. McDorman stated, “With the support we were able to purchase a large variety of equipment that we use regularly in PE class. Some items included: ball pump machine, colored cones, a variety of balls … we ordered scrimmage vests and Wiffle ball bats and balls. We were able to order items that will get a lot of use by a large population of students.”
Allen East is setting an excellent example when it comes to providing students with a variety of physical education opportunities through the new field day program as well as providing high quality physical education. We commend Allen East for being a champion of health here in Allen County.
