LIMA — Fans of Monty Python are in for a treat with Encore Theatre’s production of “Spamalot.” The Tony Award-winning best musical opens tonight.
Missy Keller, director of “Spamalot,” did her research prior to accepting the director role.
“I’ve watched ‘Spamalot’ quite a few times and went down to Columbus to see a professional theater group do it. I went down to Columbus to make sure I really wanted to direct it. When you apply to direct a show, you’ve got to really love to direct that show, or your heart’s just not in it. So I wanted to make sure my heart would be in the show to direct it before saying okay, I will direct it,” said Keller.
The show follows the film, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” Encore Theatre has given the show a PG-13 rating, due to the British humor.
“There’s just some adult content if they (children) pick up on it. It’s the British humor that could be subtle, but yet it could be in your face,” said Keller.
There are 15 people in the cast and the cast themselves are enjoying the show.
“Someone had said they didn’t know whether to audition or not, but they are so glad that they did because they’re just having a blast,” said Keller.
Keller is grateful for her cast as well as her costumers, tech people and pit crew.
“My costumers have done a heck of a job making costumes for this show. We have backstage changers because we have so many changes that happen for each character. There are so many set pieces moving on and off and the stage crew is just awesome. We have a great pit. A lot of the pit are music teachers or have graduated with music degrees, so we have a really strong pit. It’s just an all around ensemble complete with tech and performers. It makes the task so much easier,” said Keller.
