Leslie Kubinski: Serving with pride

There he marched proudly, step after step, rifle at shoulder along the parade route, a man who showed his age but marched with the confidence and heart of youth.

He stepped in when those of half his age declined after signing up for that same position. He served his country proudly so many years before with the same dignity and honor that was on display this day.

That white shirt and tie signified his admiration for those who were laid to rest at the end of their trial on earth. Those who had given part of their life to the land which we love were honored by this man and others of the Wapakoneta VFW honor guard.

As the darkness of the night crept over the town and sweat appeared on the brow with pain setting into the body, he continued to lead the way.

The crowds cheered and saluted this man, an octogenarian, as he passed and held his rifle in proper position. They were humbled by the sight and grateful for having him as part of their community and so proud as he to make all of our freedoms possible.

At the end of this march he rested, tired from a long trek and the accomplishment which he had achieved. He was proud, as we all were after his grueling accomplishment, and yet this man, this outstanding veteran, did not seek praise or attention.

I need not mention his name, for he does not seek recognition, although it is rightly and justly deserved. However, Kenny resides as a man among men. We salute you for your, dignity, honor and courage while leading the way and walking with the best.
