MINSTER — You’ll find pretzels, stollen and beer, thumping tubas, trilling accordions and beer, and floats, marching bands and more beer in Minster, as the community celebrates its German heritage this weekend with its 40th annual Oktoberfest.

“There’s going to be a lot of beer,” said Donna Grube, executive director of Auglaize and Mercer Counties Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The music and the food, that’s the heart of why people go. You go there not knowing anybody, and you’ll have a lot of friends by the end of the evening. There’s a lot of camaraderie.”

She said that’s especially evident when one of the bands starts playng “Ententanz,” known by Americans as “The Chicken Dance.”

“Everyone stops what they’re doing and starts dancing,” said Grube. “I would have to have a few Bud Lights before I do that, but it is a lot of fun.”

This year’s celebration features a parade, a beer tray relay, and a 10K run. Grube said it’s a popular event. “Runners will tell you there’s a lot of encouragement [from the crowd], people are offering them beer as they run, that sort of thing.”

German immigrants began arriving in west central Ohio in 1832, driven, the bureau says, by crop failures in their homeland, high prices, high rents and laws that they felt hampered their ability to get ahead in life. Within a generation, they turned the area into successful farms.

“You go down to that area, the farms are neat and tidy, everyone takes such great pride in what they do,” said Grube. “They work hard, and then they play hard.”

Tens of thousands will be playing hard with them this weekend. The bureau and event organizers estimate that Minster’s Oktoberfest draws 60,000 to 80,000 people.
