Reghan Winkler: How to handle a credit data breach

A recent data breach has affected individuals in our area. Local consumers have been receiving a letter from NationsBenefits, LLC providing detailed information about a recent data breach and the steps taken to address the issue.

The letter offers guidance on identity theft protection measures. It is crucial that affected individuals review credit card account statements and monitor their credit reports for any unauthorized activity.

BBB recommends following these steps if you have received one of these letters:

-Stay calm. Consumers are not liable for fraudulent charges on stolen account numbers.

-Read the letter completely. If you have questions call NationsBenefits’s dedicated assistance line at 1-866- 313-7993. Do NOT click on a link from an email or social media message regarding the data breach.

-Consider putting a credit freeze or fraud alert on your credit reports directly at all three major credit bureaus:

-Equifax

800-685-1111

www.equifax.com

-Experian

800-916-8800

www.experian.com

-TransUnion

800-680-7289

www.transunion.com

A credit freeze will prevent anyone from accessing your credit report or scores. This means you cannot apply for new credit without lifting the freeze. A fraud alert flags your account but does not automatically halt new credit from being opened in your name.

AnnualCreditReport.com is the only website authorized by the Federal Trade Commission to provide you with a free annual credit report. Be wary of ads, emails and social media messages for other services. Everyone should check their credit reports annually, whether or not they have been the victim of a data breach.

Take necessary precautions. Change passwords and enable two-factor authentication for your accounts, especially for the ones associated with the breached company. Be cautious of phishing attempts and avoid clicking on suspicious links or providing personal information unless you are certain about the source’s authenticity.

If you believe your personal information has been compromised due to the breach, please contact Better Business Bureau at 419-223-7010 or visit https://nationsbenefits.com/incidentsupport for more information.
