St. Gerard plans anti-death penalty vigil

LIMA — St. Gerard Catholic Church in Lima is welcoming people of all faiths to a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. Monday to pray for the victims of crime, those facing execution, and the abolishment of the State of Ohio’s death penalty.

The Rev. Michael D. Sergi will preside.

After a three-year hiatus, Ohio’s plans to resume executions by lethal injection in 2017 are on hold. On Jan. 26, a federal judge ruled midazolam, used in the State of Ohio’s drug protocol for executions, constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. Three individuals granted stays of execution are now scheduled for execution later this year.

Diocese of Toledo Bishop Daniel E. Thomas urges all Catholics and others to pray for those affected by violent crime.
