William E. Shaner Sr.

Wapakoneta - William E. Shaner Sr., 80, died at 1:55 a.m. Oct. 22, 2010, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 4, 1930, in Auglaize County to Carl and Eva Boop Shaner, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 21, 1950, he married Carolyn M. Metzger, who died July 11, 2010.

Mr. Shaner retired in 1988 from Ex-Cell-O/Airfoil Textron, Lima. He had also worked at Turner Toy Co., Wapakoneta, where he met his wife. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta. He was an Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8445, Wapakoneta. He was active with POW-MIA and was a member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed racing go-karts in his younger years, hunting arrowheads and researching and documenting the history of Wapakoneta.

Survivors include five children, Linda L. (Steve) Rowe, of New Knoxville, Steve Allen (Judy) Shaner, of Wapakoneta, William E. (Myia) Shaner Jr., of Buckland, Daniel Ray (Jeanna) Shaner Sr., of Uniopolis, and Lori A. (Paul) Tucker, of Lima; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Jean Ellis, of Wapakoneta; and a sister-in-law, Barbara (Lee) Winemiller, of Wapakoneta.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta. The Rev. Matthew Lee will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 8445.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, Wapakoneta.
