Childhood disorder bolsters research on infection link

After a strep infection, 11-year-old Brody Kennedy developed a fear of germs and began signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder with constant washing of hands and showering as well as a fear of going places like school where he could encounter germs. Doctors say he suffers from a mental illness called pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with streptococcus, or PANDAS. (Kirk McKoy/Los Angeles Times/MCT)
