On behalf of the board and staff of Allen County Children Services, I am asking for your support of our half-mill, five-year renewal levy on Tuesday. This levy is neither a new tax nor a tax increase.Your approval of this renewal levy would guarantee the agency would continue to receive the same level of funding for the next five years. This levy was first approved in 1996 and has been re-approved every five years. Your taxes would not increase by approving this levy. This levy is vital to our operation as it is used to pull down state and federal funds to provide services to the families and children of our community. These are challenging times for everyone as evidenced by the 25 percent increase in child abuse and neglect reports we have received over the past two years. Despite the increase, we believe we can continue to provide a high level of service to the community without asking for an increase in tax revenue. We are asking for your vote for our renewal levy Tuesday. The old African proverb is truer today than ever: It takes a community to protect a child. We thank you for your support.Scott H. Ferris is executive director of Allen County Children Services.
