Van WertClifford David Smith, 86, died at 10 p.m. May 8, 2011, at Van Wert County Hospital.He was born June 17, 1924, in Lima to Arthur and Gwendolyn Lesh Smith, who preceded him in death. On April 6, 1957, he married Elva M. Duncan, who survives in Van Wert.Mr. Smith was an accountant, retiring from the city of Wooster Welfare Department after 30 years. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a member of Van Wert Pentecostal Church of God. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, he painted scenery for Walt Disney and MGM studios. He continued to enjoy being an artist the rest of his life. He loved fishing. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving on the B-24 Liberator from Dec. 3, 1942, to Nov. 21, 1944. He received several medals during his military service. Survivors also include two daughters, Dianna L. Bowers and Cathy (Rick) Martin, both of Delphos; a son, Robert (Maxine) Smith, of Bessemer City, N.C.; a brother, James E. Smith, of Lima; three sisters, Ida Smith, of Lima, Barbara (Earl) Miller, of Harrod, and Kathryn Ogle, of Kokomo, Ind.; five grandchildren, Theresa (Craig) Wireman, Annastacia (Gary) Limron, Clifford (Crystal) Moneer, Nancy Clay and Rose Smith; two stepgrandchildren, Amanda (Mark) Atkinson and Audie Eugene (Ashley) Hall; 15 great-grandchildren, Leigh Ann Smith, Joey Taylor, Amanda Taylor, Justin Moneer, Dustin Moneer, Mark Perry, Matthew Limron, Cora Limron, Lucas Clay, MaeLynn Clay, Sabastain Moneer, Marissa Moneer, Clifford Moneer Jr., Issac Moneer and Brayden Moneer; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Lilly Ray and Kristen Moneer; and two great-great-grandchildren, Justin Taylor and Kenneth Taylor.He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Mae Gebhart Smith Martin; a sister, Dorthea Ervin; and two grandchildren, Robert Lee Smith Jr. and Allen Moneer.Services will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Pastor Ron Prewitt will officiate.
