Earl John Bruns

LimaEarl John Bruns, 91, died at 6:34 p.m. May 11, 2011, at St. Rita's Medical Center.He was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Toledo to Julian W. and Freda M. Yorges Bruns, who preceded him in death. In 1946, he married Alice M. Griffith, who survives in Lima.Mr. Bruns attended Whitmer High School and was a graduate of the University of Toledo, with a degree in electrical engineering. He was Navy veteran of World War II, serving 42 months, where he was engineering officer aboard a destroyer escort for 27 months in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was worked for 37 years at Westinghouse Electric Corporation, with the last 27 years as the aerospace engineering and quality control laboratory manager. He was a coordinator of the industrial engineering program at Lima Technical College from its inception in 1978 to 1982. He was a 10-year member of the board of directors of the Allen County Chapter of the American Red Cross and chapter chairman for six years. He had been a member of the United Way of Greater Lima and commanding officer of the local Naval Reserve unit from 1949 to 1952.He was a member of the Lima Torch Club for more than 30 years. He was a member of Market Street United Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, where he served multiple terms as an elder and deacon, and taught Sunday school classes for several years. He was a member of the Oaks golf club for 24 years.Survivors also include three sons, Donald E. (Linda) Bruns, of Lima, Richard J. (Patricia) Bruns, of Humble, Texas, David J. (JouAnn Frey) Bruns, of Waterville; and five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.Private memorial services will be held at a later date.Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, the United Way of Greater Lima or the Market Street United Presbyterian Church.Condolences may be expressed at www.bayliffandson.com.Arrangements are by Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville.
