Letter: State cuts, not unions, to blame for local problems

First Posted: 10/31/2011

The Faber/Huffman comedy show is in the news almost daily now.State Sen. Keith Faber, R-Celina, had a debate in Columbus in which he urged a yes vote on state Issue 2. He said Lancaster laid off 13 firefighters, which is an indication we need Issue 2.On the same day, the mayor of Lancaster, David Smith, said reduced local government funding that Republicans passed last year was the main cause, not adherence to state Issue 2.Meanwhile, state Rep. Matt Huffman, R-Lima, and Faber drew the reapportion map for Congress that was challenged so we'll have two primaries instead of one, costing $15 million the state doesn't have. Not to be outdone, Gov. John Kasich came to Lima to tout his record of no tax increases on the front page of the paper, while the other front page story is of Lima talking layoffs because of a $2 million hole in the city's budget created largely by state cuts. All the Republicans presidential candidates are judged by whether they support Kasich's misguided embrace of Issue 2. Mitt Romney was castigated because he didn't endorse it in a campaign stop in Cincinnati. Herman Cain and Rick Perry think it's a great idea. Do you?
