LimaThe Rev. J. Virgil Caskey, 93, of Timonium, Md., formerly of Lima, died the morning of May, 22, 2011, at St. John Neumann Residence at Stella Maris, Timonium, Md.He was born Aug. 2, 1917, to Charles and Ada Bowden Caskey, who preceded him in death.The Rev. Mr. Caskey professed his first vows exactly 22 years after his birth on Aug. 2, 1939. He was ordained a priest on June 18, 1944, at Mount St. Alphonsus in Esopus, N.Y. He began his ministry as a professor at the Redemptorist Seminary in North East, Pa., where he taught Spanish and ancient history. However, early in his priesthood he developed serious health problems and had to receive treatments for arthritic and respiratory ailments in Tucson, Ariz. These physical concerns prompted his doctors to recommend a more temperate climate. The result was a career of more than 50 years as a missionary in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. He was known to love to play golf. He would immerse himself in the communities where he did his missions and dedicated himself to the sick, making it a point to visit hospitals daily.Survivors include six nieces and nephews, Paul (Candy) Caskey, Martin (Donna) Caskey, James (Cecelia) Sanders, Joyce Ann Reed, Sharon Eagles and Oscar (Shirley) Schnipke; and a sister-in-law, Rita (Joe) Mueller.He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles (Alice), Russell (Bea) and Ernest Caskey.Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 240 W. Robb Ave., Lima. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery.Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church, where a parish wake service will be held at 8 p.m.Memorial contributions may be made to The Redemptorists at St. John Neumann Residence at Stella Maris, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road, Timonium, MD 21093.Condolences can be expressed at are by Siferd-Orians Funeral Home.
