VAN WERT — An Antwerp man was in critical condition Friday after he failed to stop at an intersection and collided with a mostly empty school bus.
Zechariah C. Price, 18, was taken to Parkview Regional Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., by medical helicopter. A nursing supervisor provided information on his condition.
The driver of the bus, Alice Knueve, 62, of Convoy, was not injured. Passenger Tina M. Gaskill, 50, was treated for minor injuries at Van Wert Hospital. A student in a wheelchair, Isaac Smith, 24, was not injured, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.
The bus was from the Thomas Edison School, a part of Van Wert County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the patrol reported.
The crash happened at 7:53 a.m. Friday on U.S. 30 at the state Route 49 north intersection in Tully Township. Knueve was driving the 2007 Blue Bird school bus west on U.S. 30, the patrol reported.
Price was southbound on state Route 49 when he failed to yield at the intersection and collided with the bus, the patrol reported.
The bus struck the driver’s door on Price’s car, according to the patrol.
Price’s car came to rest in the median, and the bus was disabled, partially blocking the westbound lanes of U.S. 30, the patrol reported.
Price was wearing a seat belt, and so was Knueve. Smith was in a wheelchair and was properly secured and was wearing his seat belt, the patrol reported.
The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed, the patrol reported.
