Tom Usher of The Lima News wins 2017 Bill Nichols Award

LIMA — Tom Usher, of The Lima News, is the eighth recipient of the Bill Nichols Award. Usher was honored at the Ohio Athletic Conference Football Media Day on Thursday at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Bill Nichols Award was created to recognize a member of the media who demonstrated an understanding and passion for amateur athletics, while covering the students and programs of NCAA Division III and the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Usher is a native of Cincinnati and worked for the Cincinnati Enquirer and Xavier University from 1976 to 1986 before moving onto The Lima News, where he has covered sports in northwest Ohio for 30 years.

Usher has covered numerous Ohio high school tournaments, in addition to the Cleveland Indians in the 1995 and 1997 World Series, several Cincinnati Reds playoff games and Ohio Northern University’s basketball national championship season in 1993.

Usher was named the Prep Sports Writer of the Year in 2008, and has won more than 30 Associated Press awards. He was the Ohio AP Sportswriter of the Year in 1996, runner-up as the AP Sportswriter of the Year in 2012 and in 2014 was named to the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Hall of Fame.

He continues to cover Ohio Northern and OAC events in his retirement.
