Boosters host raffle fundraiser

ADA — The Ada Academic and Music Boosters are having a purse raffle to support programs at Ada schools.

The fundraiser will take place at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Ada at 2 p.m. Feb. 15. The raffle includes a total of $2,500 in prizes such as designer purses from Coach and Lia Sophia jewelry.

Students participate in real world simulation

LIMA — At 11 a.m. Thursday at Heritage Elementary School, pupils will culminate their studies in the project “Real World Real Money.”

The project will simulate the real world in financial practices. It serves as the final installment of lessons led by marketing pupils at Lima Senior High School, who taught financial literacy to the third-graders for the past four months.

Kindergarten screening announced

DELPHOS — Franklin Elementary School will be registering children for kindergarten screening for the 2015-16 school year from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 2 through 6. Children who are eligible must be 5 years old by Aug. 1.

Screening clinics will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 6, 13 and 20.

Allen East has also opened registration for screenings at the elementary school’s office from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Extended hours will be available from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Feb. 5, 11, 17 and 23.

Lima schools host game night

LIMA — North Middle School will host a family bingo and chili night from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Regular bingo card will cost 50 cents each or three for $1. Grand prize bingo cards cost $5, which includes a bike or tablet. Other prizes include gift cards and jewelry. Chili will be available for $1.

Elementary class publishes book

CONVOY — Cindy Tinnel’s Crestview Elementary School class published its book “Holidays of the Year.”

The book features a collection of written and illustrated short stories, created by pupils describing different holidays throughout the year.

Participating pupils included Brandon Coyne, Mattie Leppard, Jayden Renner, Peyton Goings-Hughes, Avery Figley, Ashley Motycka, Adalynn Longstreth, Melody Puckett, Kaygen Bogle, Kamden Thompson and Jullian Moore and Brynn Mollenkopf.

Pupils win local spelling bee

CONVOY — Crestview held both elementary and middle school spellings bees earlier this month.

For the fifth-grade class, Hayden Tomlinson came in first place with Travis Shaffer as runner-up. The sixth-grade winner was Carson Kreischer, and runner-up was Kenzie Leeth; seventh-grade winner was Trinity Snyder and runner-up was Ragen Harting; and eighth-grade winner was Sonny Chorvas, and runner-up was Rayana Thatcher.

Winners will continue to the Van Wert County Spelling Bee at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 in Marsh auditorium.

Allen East announces students of the month

LIMA — For the month of December, Allen East seventh- and eighth-graders, Kate Binkley and Ashley Cheney were announced as students of the month.

Locals participate in annual hoop shoot competition

FINDLAY — On Jan. 11, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks hosted its annual hoop shoot competition at the University of Findlay. Allen, eastern Auglaize and Putnam county were all represented. The following placed in the competition:

•8-9 girls — Heidi Keller of Spencerville shot 19 of 25 and 3 of 5 in a shoot off, earning second place.

10-11 girls – Lydia Falke of Spencerville shot 12 of 25, earning third place.

12-13 girls – Kayla White of Bluffton shot 17 of 25, placing in fourth.

8-9 boys – Landon Callahan of Temple Christian shot 20 of 25 and 5 of 5 in a shoot off, coming in first place.

10-11 boys – Eli Harter of Spencerville shot 17 of 25 and 4 of 5, 2 of 5 and 3 of 5 in shoot offs, placing him third.

12-13 boys – Brody Bowman of Temple Christian shot 24 of 25, coming in first place.

First-place winners Landon Callahan and Brody Bowman will compete in the Ohio Elks Association competition on Feb. 14 in Gahanna.

Schools gear-up for county spelling competition

LIMA — Allen County’s annual spelling bee will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Science Building at OSU-Lima.

Radio personality, Mike Miller, will be the announcer alongside judges Judy Chaffins, Mindy Scuhlz and Roger Nimps.

Allen East, Bath, Bluffton, Delphos, Elida and Liberty schools will have pupils participating in the competition. Winners will earn a cash prize.

Rover team looking for sponsors

LIMA — The Lima Senior High School Rover Challenge Team is asking for donations to help sponsor the team’s trip to Hunstville, Alabama, in April for a national competition.The team projects costs are about $15,500 for travel expenses, rover construction, supplies, food and accommodations.

Leadership class presents check

LEIPSIC — On Tuesday, Leipsic High School’s freshmen Leadership Class presented a check for $2,451 to Amanda Sizemore and the Challenged Champions Equestrian Center in Ottawa.

Pupils raised the money by organizing a money drive and 5K color run for the school and community.

Leadership is one of two optional courses offered by the high school’s business program.
