ADA — Ohio Northern University has drawn a traditional event usually reserved for bigger universities.
The university will host the Percussive Arts Society Ohio Day of Percussion Saturday. The clinic/concert draws both musicians wishing to expand their abilities and well-known performers from around the country.
“It is the first time ONU is hosting this event,” said associate professor Sarah Waters. “There are world class musicians and very famous performers.”
Registration for the clinic will begin an 9 a.m. in the Presser Hall lobby. Admission is $5 for ONU students and $8 for adults. The solo showcase concert begins at 9:30 a.m. and will feature soloists from area high schools and universities. Admission to the showcase is included with registration.
The ensemble showcase concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Freed Center for the Performing Arts, with $5 tickets available at the door. The concert will feature a wide variety of percussion artists such as Steve Houghton, Jonathan Ovalle, Nick Angelis, Eric Schweikert and Mark Berry.
“This is a great way to see professional percussionists in all fields and learn from their clinics,” Waters said.
The performers will also teach clinics throughout the day, and Jim Bailey of Evans and Promark will present a drumhead selection and tuning clinic. There will be an experimental session for those wishing to try playing the steel drums.
