AKRON — B.J. Gladden made his first start a memorable one: opening with two dunks, one off a steal and a half-court sprint to the rim, to finish with 11 points as Akron romped past Division III Bluffton 92-53 Saturday night.

The back-to-back dunks by Gladden, a redshirt freshman, propelled the Zips (7-4) to an 8-0 start and they never looked back. Gladden hadn’t scored more than four points in a game previously. Pat Forsythe scored 14 points and Nyles Evans 11 for Akron, which emptied its bench as 13 of 14 players scored.

Auburn 89, Xavier 88, 2OT

AUBURN, Ala. — KT Harrell scored 24 points as Auburn (5-5) overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to knock off Xavier (8-3) in double overtime Saturday night.

VCU 68, Cincinnati 47

CINCINNATI — Melvin Johnson scored 18 points with four of 8-3 Virginia Commonwealth’s 15 3-pointers on Saturday in a 68-47 win over Cincinnati (7-3), which was playing without coach Mick Cronin.

Cronin has an aneurysm and will be sidelined indefinitely while doctors decide how to treat it. The unruptured aneurysm was detected when the 43-year-old coach got tests this week to see why he’s been having headaches.

Dayton 78, Boston U 62

DAYTON — Kendall Pollard and Darrell Davis each scored a career-high 19 points to help Dayton (8-2) roll to a victory over Boston University (3-7).

Toledo 83, McNeese State 69

LAKE CHARLES, La. — Justin Drummond scored 17 points and was one of four Toledo starters in double figures as the Rockets (7-4) beat McNeese State (5-4).
