Heaphy closes barbecue restaurant

LIMA — Local restaurateur John Heaphy has closed a barbecue restaurant he first opened in 2010.

Q Smokin’ BBQ & Fixins closed this week at 810 W. North St. Heaphy said in an email the restaurant “didn’t fit in his future growth plans.” He doesn’t have any immediate plans for the property.

Heaphy is growing other parts of his restaurant business. Good Food Hospitality Management now includes multiple restaurants in the region. The spots include:

•Four Beer Barrel locations, two in Lima, one in Findlay that opened in 2013 and and one in St. Marys that opened in 2012.

•The newly opened Old City Prime steakhouse and the Upper Lounge in downtown Lima.

•Five Happy Daz restaurants, including four in Lima and a new spot in Wapakoneta.

In 2010, Heaphy opened the Q, a Southern-style barbecue restaurant featuring smoked brisket, chicken and pulled pork. The restaurant was a renovation of what had been the oldest Happy Daz location in Lima.

At the time, Heaphy said he saw a void of good barbecue in the area and wanted to fill it. The restaurant served meat smoked on site and sides made from scratch. It featured blues music and decor, including a tribute to Pickle’s Blues Extravaganza.

In 2013, readers of The Lima News voted Q Smokin’ BBQ & Fixins best place in the region for barbecue.
