Shawnee boys claim swim invitational title

LIMA — The Shawnee boys won three relay events on their way to winning the Lima Holiday Invitational held Saturday at the Lima YMCA.

The Indians finished with 446 points followed by Ottawa-Glandorf (368), Celina (280), Ada (186) and Van Wert (151) rounding out the top five in the 17-team event.

Shawnee’s Cobie Mikesell, Jon Andrews, Trey Briggs and Noah Curl teamed up to win the 200 medley relay. Mikesell, Andrews, Joey Ellis and Chris Soules won the 200 freestyle relay and Ellis, Briggs, Curl and Soules finished in first place in the 400 freestyle relay.

Other area competitors winning individual events included Luke Kleman (200 freestyle), Ben Sealts (500 freestyle and 100 backstroke) and Nick Fenbert (200 IM) of Ottawa-Glandorf, Mason Baker (50 freestyle) of Celina, Mitchell Wilcox (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke) of Ada and Mikesell (100 freestyle)

In the girls event, Aleah Hixenbaugh of Shawnee won the 200 and 500 freestyles.

Versailles won the team title with 370 points followed by Ottawa-Glandorf (366), Celina (270) Minster (235) and Kenton (216) in the 16-team field.

Other area competitors winning individual events included Nikki Borgerding (200 IM and 100 backstroke) of Minster, Mo Gray (100 breaststroke) of Kenton and the Ottawa-Glandorf 400 freestyle relay team of Kindra Theisen, Amber Ellerbrock, Kathryn Samuelson and Briana Fenbert.


FAIRBORN — Four Wapakoneta wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the GMVWA Holiday Tournament at Wright State University.

Tyler Copeland (138), Dallas Ambos (145), Heath Newman (170) and Landon Hall (182) are all scheduled to compete today.

Steven Major of Indian Lake also reached the quarters in the 195-pound class.

Wapak is in fourth place in the Division II, III standings, trailing Graham Local (121), West Branch (76.5) and Indian Lake (73). Bath is tied for 20th with 29 points and Van Wert is 27th with 15 points.

The event is scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. today.
