SPENCERVILLE — A 76-year-old Delphos man died when he was run over while trying to stop a grain wagon from rolling.

Melvin Heitz died from injuries in the farming accident that happened just after 7 p.m. Monday, Allen County Sheriff Sam Crish said.

The incident happened in the parking lot of the Amanda Township House at 690 S. Conant Road near Spencerville, Crish said.

Heitz’ son pulled into the parking lot of the township house on a tractor towing the grain wagon. Heitz unhooked the grain wagon, and his son pulled the tractor away, Crish said.

The wagon, full of soybeans and weighing 20,000 pounds, began to roll with a pickup truck in its path along the road, Crish said.

“As the wagon rolled closer to the truck, the son saw his father flip between the wagon and the truck. It ran him over,” Crish said. “It rolled over on him.”

When deputies and other emergency responders arrived, they saw Heitz on the ground between the front and rear wheels of the grain wagon. People at the scene performed CPR, but Heitz was too badly injured, Crish said.

Heitz’ death is being handled as an accident, the sheriff said.
