LIMA — A new attraction is chugging into town.

The Lima Express, the city’s newest professional sports organization, will play its inaugural home game at 7 p.m. Sunday at Lima Central Catholic High School against the Erie Hurricane.

Part of the Premier Basketball League, the Express will compete against teams ranging from Illinois to South Carolina. Owner Lewis Shine promises that it will be a fun, exciting experience.

“The PBL is considered a minor league,” he said. “We’re the No. 2 minor league in the United States, after the NBA D-League. It’s a very credible league with a great relationship with the NBA and the D-League.”

More than simply another basketball game, Shine promises a more entertainment-focused experience at Express games.

“For our home opener, we’ll have gospel and R&B artist Shirley Murdock singing the national anthem, and we’ll have a number of other things going on a halftime,” Shine said. “So we’re really trying to make it more of a pro experience. We’ll be having some people playing live music when you come inside the doors. We want it to be more of an experience rather than just a basketball game.”

The Express will play 10 home games from January to April.
