Martha Elizabeth Brunk Showalter

Martha Elizabeth Brunk Showalter, 90, of Harrisonburg, Va., formerly of Elida, died peacefully in her sleep Jan. 14, 2009, with her family by her side.

She was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Elida to Gabriel and Dora Mosier Brunk, who preceded her in death. On Nov. 28, 1940, she married Hubert Daniel Showalter, who died March 25, 1983.

Mrs. Showalter was a homemaker. She accepted the Lord as her Savior at a young age and was a member of Pike Mennonite Church. She served with her husband in various missions and volunteer service assignments. After her children were married, she was involved in taxi service for the church community and was involved in home care for several community friends. She cared for Marguerite Davis in her home from September 1983 to June 2002.

She lived in her own home, with her daughter supervising her care for the past five years. On Dec. 13, 2008, she was moved to another daughter's home in Dayton, Va., where she was cared for by the family until her death. She was born a twin and was the last surviving of 10 children. She enjoyed making ceramics to give to her children, grandchildren and friends. She also enjoyed crocheting scrubbies by the dozens, sewing and reading.

Survivors include nine children, Violet (Christian) Ropp, of Brunner, Ontario; Helen (Daniel) Bear, of Timberville, Va., Reba (Raymond) Brunk, of Dayton, Va., Larry (Rhoda Knicely) Showalter, of Onego, W.Va., Leon (Janet Harold) Showalter, of Spring Creek, Va., Leanna (James) Rhodes, of Harrisonburg, Va., Dora (Serge) Ivanitsky, of Salem, Ore., Nelson (Marie Rodes) Showalter, of Port Republic, Va., and Alvin (Debra Heatwole) Showalter, of Mount Crawford, Va.; 32 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Roy (Mary Kathryn Martin) Showalter, of Harrisonburg, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Waneta Rose; and a grandson, Menno Karel Ropp.

Services will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pike Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, Va. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church.
