LLOYD O. SMITH, 84, died at 1:45 a.m. Jan. 21, 2007, at the Dorothy Love Retirement Community, Sidney.

He was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Pike County to Herbert F. and Viola James Smith, who preceded him in death. On Feb. 20, 1943, he married Doris Steele Nelson, who died Nov. 7, 2006. They were married for 63 years.

Mr. Smith retired as a project engineer from the Campbell's Soup Co, where he was instrumental in the construction of Campbell's first V-8 plant in Napoleon. He also supervised the construction of Campbell's major soup plant in Maxston, N.C. He was a trustee for the Chapel by the Sea, South Padre Island, Texas, for several years. He was a 1940 graduate of Springfield High School, Springfield, and a 1946 graduate of The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the Triangle Engineering Fraternity. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines. He and his wife had lived in Beaverdam, Defiance, Maxston, N.C., and South Padre Island, Texas. They maintained several friendships in each location.

Survivors include a son, Stephen (Teresa) Smith, of New Bremen; twin granddaughters, Erin and Molly Smith; a sister, Audrey McClurg, of Springfield; and a niece, Sharon Swedlow, of Cleveland.

Memorial services will begin at noon Thursday at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, New Bremen. The Rev. John W. Tostrick will officiate.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association-Research or the Dorothy Love Retirement Community Employees Christmas Fund.
