Vernon L. Rex

Vernon L. Rex, 74, died at 1:06 p.m. Jan. 1, 2009, at St. Rita's Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 15, 1934, in Lima to Dale B. and Katharine Young Rex. His father survives in Lima. His mother preceded him in death. On Aug. 10, 1951, he married Carol "Sue" Stedke, who survives in Lima. They had been married for 57 years.

Mr. Rex retired after more than 38 years as a manager from Buckeye Pipe Line, where he had also been an electrician. He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Elida, where he taught Sunday school for several years. He had served as commander of the Lima Power Squadron and was a member of Lodge 706 Free & Accepted Masons. He was an avid sailor and taught boating safety courses. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors also include two sons, Gary L. (Meredith) Rex, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Michael J. (Kathy) Lancaster, of Columbus; a daughter, Kathy L. (Tom) Kerr, of Lima; three grandchildren, Andrea M. (Jason) Miller, of Monclova, and Emily S. Kerr and Tommy A. Kerr, both of Lima; two brothers, James D. "Jim" (Judy) Rex, of Spencerville, and Mike J. Rex, of Columbus; a sister, Linda J. (Jim) Neuenschwander, of Granville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Rode will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel, where a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m.
